Theo Jansen and Umerus 01 by Pete Ashton on Flickr

I just discovered Theo Jansen today and thought I should share some of his amazing work.   His long term project is centred around creating a ‘new nature’, building a collection of kinetic beasts sculpted from electrical tubing and powered only by wind.   They’re absolutely beautiful to watch and have had many trial exhibitions around the worlds…I say ‘trial’ as the idea is to eventually release these animals in herds on beaches to live their own lives :)

Try to overcome the silly soundtrack on this video! It was the best quality I could find and it really is worth it to see the sculptures come to life.  The genius and work behind kinetic sculptures really does amaze me.

Exploring his website is muchos fun, he gives a little insight into how each component of the sculptures work.
